As a trailblazer in energy storage, BYD Energy Storage has once again raised the bar for safety by becoming the first company in China to successfully complete the CSA TS-800 Large-Scale Fire Test (LSFT). This achievement highlights its unwavering commitment to developing innovative, reliable, and safe energy storage solutions for a global market. Safety remains the cornerstone of BYD’s development, and the company continues to uphold the highest safety standards.
Under the supervision of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA Group), BYD’s MC Cube product adhered to stringent technical specifications throughout the testing process. The TS-800 LSFT subjected the MC Cube to extreme fire conditions, simulating large-scale fire scenarios to test its ability to suppress fire spread. The results were remarkable: the MC Cube demonstrated industry-leading performance, with no fire spread between cabinets and minimal post-fire damage. This milestone underscores the system's ability to safeguard against fire risks in even the harshest conditions, setting a new safety benchmark in the energy storage industry.
The MC Cube was designed and tested in compliance with globally recognized safety standards, including UL 9540/9540A and NFPA 855/72/69. The CSA TS-800 standard, which aligns with California Fire Code (CFC) and International Fire Code (IFC) requirements, is also poised to meet the future NFPA 855 2026 guidelines. During the LSFT, BYD’s MC Cube was evaluated for its capacity to prevent fire from spreading to adjacent units or external environments, ensuring the protection of personnel, property, and the surrounding ecosystem.
To simulate real-world conditions, the MC Cube cabinets were arranged according to an actual 16MWh station layout. Cabinets were spaced 600mm and 2400mm apart, with 100% load capacity to replicate operational scenarios. During the test, temperatures inside the battery cabinet exceeded 1000°C, with a peak heat release rate of 5.43MW. Despite this, the adjacent cabinets’ temperatures remained below 60°C, well within safety limits. BYD’s advanced Blade Batteries for Energy Storage played a pivotal role in this success, employing features like active detection and off-gassing to prevent combustion and ensure thermal isolation.
The MC Cube’s exceptional performance can be attributed to its innovative design features:
