CATL Achieves First Lithium Battery Rail Transport Milestone

On November 19, CATL's inaugural rail trial transport of power lithium batteries launched simultaneously in Guiyang and Yibin. The ceremony was attended by officials such as Huang Zhi, Deputy Director of Sichuan Provincial Development and Reform Commission; Lü Jinsong, Director of Guizhou Provincial Department of Commerce; Meng Xiangfeng, Vice President of CATL; and Liu Jie, Head of CATL's Supply Chain and Logistics Department. With the departure of a train loaded with CATL products bound for Shanghai, China's power lithium battery rail transport officially achieved a "zero breakthrough."

Efficient and secure transportation of power lithium batteries is critical to the industry's development. To reduce transportation costs and enhance the resilience of the new energy battery supply chain, CATL actively participated in the pilot program for lithium battery rail transport organized by China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. In June this year, multiple tests—including "thermal runaway" and "rail impact"—were successfully conducted on lithium battery rail containers on June 5 and 15. The batteries demonstrated excellent safety, stability, packaging, and in-box securing methods, earning unanimous recognition from attending experts.

Rail transport offers significant advantages, such as high capacity, moderate costs, and minimal weather impact. The opening of power lithium battery rail transport promotes the shift of bulk and long-distance freight from road to rail, helping to reduce emissions, lower costs, and improve efficiency. In the future, domestic lithium battery rail transport could integrate with the China-Europe Railway Express, further enhancing the global competitiveness of China's lithium battery industry.
