Sunshine Premium Storage 30MW/60MWh Project: Green Transition for China’s Steel Industry

The Sunshine Premium Storage project, a 30.09MW/60.18MWh user-side energy storage power station supported by REPT BATTERO for Dongfang Special Steel, has recently achieved official grid connection. This project sets a benchmark for green energy transition within the steel industry.

As climate change intensifies worldwide, countries are implementing measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Given the steel industry’s significant contribution to global carbon emissions, its green transformation is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality. In alignment with these goals, the Chinese government has introduced policies to accelerate the industry’s green transition, encouraging companies to adopt advanced energy-saving technologies and environmental protection measures to enhance energy efficiency and lower emissions.

Changzhou Dongfang Special Steel Co., Ltd., a company specializing in ferrous metal smelting and rolling processes, is strategically focused on transformation and modernization, aiming to establish itself as a steel producer known for high-quality bars. However, with the steel industry’s heavy reliance on coal, adjusting its energy structure could pose challenges, such as:

  • Potential impacts on grid stability and power supply reliability, requiring improved grid load management and power dispatching capabilities;
  • Increased demands on the power system to ensure a stable power supply and higher power quality due to new technologies and processes.

This 30MW/60MWh energy storage project was designed specifically to address these green transition needs within the steel industry.

Featuring a string energy storage architecture, the project uses a “one cluster, one management” approach to optimize battery pack balance and charge-discharge efficiency. The high-efficiency thermal management system enhances temperature uniformity, extends battery lifespan, stabilizes system performance, and minimizes grid impact.

The successful grid connection of this energy storage station reflects the ongoing green transformation of China’s steel industry. Guided by the nation’s dual carbon objectives, this transformation is accelerating.
