On October 24, 2024, CATL introduced the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery, marking the world’s first hybrid vehicle battery with a pure electric range exceeding 400 kilometers and supporting 4C ultra-fast charging. This breakthrough redefines battery standards for high-capacity extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), setting a new benchmark for hybrid energy solutions.
With EREVs and PHEVs becoming more popular in the new energy vehicle market, consumers have grown increasingly dissatisfied with the limited electric range, slow charging times, and reduced performance at low temperatures. These issues have highlighted the urgent need for a hybrid solution that offers a reliable, high-performance electric experience. Freevoy addresses these demands by freeing drivers from the frequent charging associated with traditional hybrids, providing a single charge that can power a full week’s commute. Additionally, the battery charges rapidly, delivering over 280 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes, effectively reducing range anxiety for hybrid drivers.
The exceptional range and charging speed of Freevoy stem from CATL's continued technological advancements. During the launch event, Gao Huan, CTO of CATL's China E-car Business, highlighted the innovative features powering Freevoy’s performance.
Freevoy’s cathode material benefits from a surface modification technology and a high-voltage electrolyte formulation that forms a nano-protective layer, minimizing side reactions within the active layer. This, combined with high-activity, excited-state particles in the cathode material, significantly enhances lithium-ion transport efficiency. With CATL's SOC full-scene high-precision model and upgraded BMS intelligent algorithms, Freevoy achieves a 40% increase in SOC control accuracy and more than a 10% boost in electric utilization, yielding a pure electric range exceeding 400 kilometers. CATL’s model data analysis on charge-discharge polarization characteristics predicts future battery discharge capacity, implementing a multi-level power prediction and control strategy that enhances hybrid vehicle power performance by 20%.
CATL has incorporated its 4C ultra-fast charging technology in Freevoy, providing over 280 kilometers of range with just 10 minutes of charging. Through innovations such as a fast ion conductor coating on the cathode, second-generation fast-charging graphite, a multi-gradient layered electrode design, and a high-conductivity electrolyte, Freevoy enables hybrids to achieve charging speeds on par with fully electric vehicles.
The Freevoy also utilizes CATL's sodium-ion battery technology, which overcomes the typical low-temperature limitations of new energy vehicles. The battery can discharge in temperatures as low as -40°C, charge at -30°C, and maintain smooth performance down to -20°C, delivering a consistent driving experience across temperature extremes.
Three technological advancements support Freevoy’s superior low-temperature capabilities through sodium-ion battery integration. First, CATL’s AB battery system combines sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries in an optimal ratio with mixed connections, enhancing low-temperature range by 5%. Additionally, using the sodium-ion battery as an SOC benchmark increases system control accuracy by 30%, adding over 10 kilometers to the pure electric range. Finally, CATL’s full temperature range BMS technology ensures precise zonal management of each chemical system, mitigating issues like charge prediction inaccuracies and power reduction in extreme temperatures.
Freevoy’s exceptional performance extends to its reliability and safety. CATL has established a comprehensive reliability management system covering everything from material selection to big data-driven early warning mechanisms, ensuring the highest levels of durability and safety.
Already implemented in various models from brands like Li Auto, AVATR, DEEPAL, CHANGAN NEVO, and NETA, the Freevoy is set to power 30 hybrid vehicle models from Geely, Chery, GAC, VOYAH, and others by 2025.
The launch of Freevoy exemplifies CATL’s commitment to elevating the driving experience and advancing the future of electrification. Looking ahead, CATL aims to continue its pursuit of technological innovation, delivering unmatched new energy solutions and accelerating the shift towards widespread electrification.
