CATL and Masdar Unveil World's Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project

On January 17, CATL and Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy company, announced a groundbreaking partnership to develop the world’s first large-scale, 24/7 giga-scale project in Abu Dhabi. This innovative initiative will integrate solar power with battery storage to ensure continuous, round-the-clock energy supply.

With an investment exceeding $6 billion, the project will feature 5.2 GW of solar capacity and 19 GWh of energy storage, making it the largest solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project globally. Capable of delivering up to 1 GW of uninterrupted baseload power, it sets a new global standard for clean energy development.

Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer at Masdar, stated: “As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we have ensured collaboration with top-tier partners who can deliver at the highest standards.”

CATL will supply its cutting-edge TENER technology, which offers comprehensive safety, extended lifespan, and a high level of integration. This ensures the project's stable and efficient operation. Compared to previous generations, the upgraded system features enhanced protection levels and improved overall energy performance, making it adaptable to diverse operating conditions and application scenarios—providing a next-generation solution for today’s evolving energy needs.

Founded in 2006, Masdar has played a pivotal role in advancing the UAE’s vision of sustainability and climate leadership. The company has been involved in projects across more than 40 countries and aims to expand its renewable energy capacity to 100 GW by 2030.
