Recently, 66 units of Sungrow's PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage system were delivered to the UK, highlighting the company's accelerated deployment of energy storage solutions in Europe. In the Middle East, over 1,500 units are scheduled for installation, contributing to one of the world’s largest energy storage projects, with a total capacity of 7.8 GWh. Similarly, in Asia, several PowerTitan 2.0 projects have been successfully commissioned, showcasing exceptional performance in cost efficiency, safety, grid integration, and more. PowerTitan 2.0 is rapidly gaining global traction, leading the energy storage industry into the new AC Block era.
The PowerTitan 2.0 introduces the revolutionary AC Block, which integrates a 5 MWh battery and a 2.5 MW PCS into a standard 20-foot container, a significant departure from traditional methods that separate direct current (DC) battery systems and alternating current (AC) PCS systems. This innovative design not only reconfigures components but also efficiently combines the battery, PCS, fire suppression systems, and other modules, pushing the limits of spatial engineering. According to a report by S&P Global Commodity Insights, only three companies worldwide, including Sungrow, currently offer authentic AC Block solutions.
Dr. James Li, Sungrow's ESS Director for Europe, attributes the success of PowerTitan 2.0 to Sungrow's fully self-developed PACK/BMS/PCS/EMS technologies, which are driven by a fundamental design philosophy and a comprehensive approach. PowerTitan 2.0 also revolutionizes PACK structures and manufacturing processes, reducing the width of each PACK by 40mm for a more compact layout. Each cabinet now houses 12 smaller standardized PCS units, matching the PACK size specifications to optimize space utilization. These innovations make the AC Block concept practical and effective.
The more compact structure brings increased heat dissipation challenges. To address this, PowerTitan 2.0 employs a fully liquid-cooled solution for both battery PACKs and PCS units, ensuring rapid heat dissipation and extending the system's lifespan.
“In operational projects, PowerTitan 2.0 has demonstrated exceptional competitiveness,” said Dr. James Li. It reduces land usage by 29%, requiring only 2,000 square meters for a 100 MWh system, significantly lowering land costs. The integrated AC-DC block design simplifies deployment with embedded PCSs, pre-assembled components, MVT, and thorough factory testing to minimize on-site installation time.
PowerTitan 2.0’s innovative AC-DC block design boosts the system's round-trip efficiency (RTE) by 2%, increases total discharge volume over its lifecycle by 8%, and reduces fault losses by 92%. Standardized short cable connections between batteries and PCS within a fully liquid-cooled cabinet, combined with advanced AI-based battery health management and ArcDefender Technology, effectively minimize thermal runaway and arcing risks, ensuring overall cabinet safety.
The system also incorporates the latest Stem Cell Grid Technology, enabling seamless 0ms grid switching and active harmonic absorption. It has been widely deployed in global projects such as the SPP Hybrid project in Thailand, the Dalia project in the Middle East, and China’s offshore grid-forming energy storage project in Guangxi. This solution plays a critical role in supporting the stable operation of new power systems. Notably, PowerTitan 2.0 operates at a low noise level below 75 dBA and uses environmentally friendly materials, including biodegradable or renewable transformer oil, refrigerants, and fire extinguishing agents, aligning with sustainability goals.
Looking forward, with continuous product innovation and further cost reductions, AC Blocks like PowerTitan 2.0 are set to become the preferred choice in the energy storage market, driving the global energy transition forward.
